"When you have met one autistic person, you have met one autistic person": Current developments in working with autism" (online workshop)

by Jennifer Randall (CBT Therapist)

We are excited to be able to offer a workshop facilitated by an experienced CBT Therapist who works in adult mental health services in the NHS. Jen also ahs a growing private practice. She will be providing a comprehensive update about the current thinking about autism. She will talk about why the long-standing "Theory of Mind" has been proven to be to narrow, and unhelpful. Further she will explain why Asperger's is no longer "a thing". She will be sharing her specialist knowledge and talk about her experiences working with adults who have an experience of autism. 

This workshop would be of interest to all those in the helping profession who work with children and adults with autism. Those working in social care or school settings (such as social workers and teachers) will learn more about engaging and working with parents of children with a autism, or present as autistic themselves.   

This workshop can be taken as part 1 followed by the workshop by Prof Rudi Dallos on working systemically with families and autism and the SAFE model in schools.

Dr Ramón Karamat Ali will be contributing to the programme of CPD events of the Psychology Department by presenting on the topic of how to consider the adults of children who are referred for mental health concerns. He will share his perspective and through case material illustrate how best to approach this potenital thorny issue. His experience as a couple and as a family therapist will be combined to offer a perspective which can help therapists and counsellors consider the parents in the lives of the children and adolescents about whom there are concerns, in order to maximse the beneficial impact of their psychological therapeutic support provided.

Wellbeing Retreat
"I AM: A creative arts and wellbeing conference"

"Adolescent Self-Harm: A Systemic-Attachment Perspective" (Stellenbosch Psychology Department Colloquium)

Dr Ramón Karamat Ali will be contributing to the programme of CPD events of the Psychology Department by presenting on the topic of self-harm in the adolescent client population. It is a phenomenonon that is on the rise globally and therefore psychologists, therapists, counsellors and social workers come across an increasing amount of dstressed young people as part of their work. Dr Ramka has a lot of experien ce working in adolescent mental health, providing assessment and treatmnet to adolescents and their families. He will offer a systemic approach informed by an attachment-focussed approach to working with trauma and emotional regulation within close relatiionships.
